Dr Michael Horwood is a qualified Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). He is able to undertake an aviation medical examination for commercial and private pilot’s licences and air traffic controllers.

A CASA medical will assess a pilots fitness to fly. There are three classes of aviation medicals being:

Commercial pilots (Class 1) – basic medical as well as ancillary test, such as an audiogram, ECG, blood tests for glucose and lipids. Unless otherwise advised by the Aviation Medicine Section, a Class 1 medical certificate is valid for one year.

Private pilots (Class 2) – basic medical but not the additional ancillary tests. Unless otherwise advised by the Aviation Medicine Section, a Class 2 medical certificate is valid for four years for applicants less than 40 years of age on the day of issue or two years for those aged over 40 years.

Air Traffic Controllers (Class 3) – basic medical but not the additional ancillary tests. Unless otherwise advised by the Aviation Medicine Section, a Class 3 medical certificate is valid for two years.
